Oyster Shell packs added muscle

1 August 2014

Aquamarine Power has replaced the cylinder module on its Oyster 800 wave energy device as the unit’s summer refit passes the halfway mark. It took two days to refit the upgraded 23-tonne module (pictured) to the 800kW machine at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney. “This is an important waymark on our route to reliable electricity generation,” said chief executive Martin McAdam. “This new module incorporates a number of significant upgrades to the one it replaces including new check valves, hoses and control and instrumentation. “We have worked closely with suppliers Hunger Hydraulik and Calder Engineering to make it robust enough to withstand the extreme forces it will experience during operation. McAdam added that the Oyster device remains on track for power production later in the year
